Ashfield Voluntary Action launches its volunteer opportunities online

Volunteering is at the heart of what we do, and for many years AVA has helped local charities and community groups to promote their volunteering opportunities.

AVA also provides volunteering opportunities internally and is able to provide a more hands-on and supportive environment for would-be volunteers who would benefit from a little extra help. We provide a friendly and welcoming environment for all volunteers; including those who may have additional needs.

As many people are interested in volunteering within their own community, often for practical reasons, we have developed a section of our website for volunteering opportunities area-by-area, including opportunities for people who are interested in volunteering, but may not easily be able to get out and about.

Megan Walker joined us as a volunteer in March 2021. Megan came to us through the Princes Trust when she was originally looking for work experience. Megan volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and supports us on our Reception and with Administration, and has become a very popular and integral part of the team.

Megan said that volunteering was a new experience, having only ever done work experience in school before. Megan said, "I have definitely learned to think on my feet and feel that I have got much better at interacting with people."

Megan has really grown in confidence and blossomed through this volunteering opportunity and we are now looking for ways for her to progress. Megan said, "I feel that I have really developed my knowledge and skills. Before I joined AVA, I hadn't had much experience in using Excel and I have definitely got a lot better at using it. Also, it's nice to get out of the house and do something that I actually enjoy. I like the days I do; the routine of working at AVA, and I have found everyone to be really friendly. If you're thinking about volunteering, I would say say just do it, - bite the bullet. It gives you the opportunity to do something and decide whether you would like it or not".

Sarah Taylor from AVA said, "Megan has fitted in incredibly well. We are a pretty small team and sometimes we are rushed off our feet. Not only has Megan proved herself to be an absolute asset to AVA and really helped through busy times, she has fitted in brilliantly and has become a really popular member of our team".

If you have been encouraged by Megan's story why not get in touch, or click HERE to look at some of the volunteering opportunities we are currently promoting. Also, remember to look at our website regularly, as this is the first of our features on our wonderful volunteers who are a valued and important part of AVA.
