26 November 2021
In September 2021, Ashfield Voluntary Action held a listening event for the LGBT+ community. This initial consultation shone a spotlight on the isolation people from the LGBT+ community can feel and highlighted the need for more social activities in Ashfield.
The listening event was followed by a survey to gain better insight into the kind of activities the community would like to see. As a direct result of this consultation, AVA set up an LGBT+ Facebook page and arranged weekly meet-ups on a Tuesday evening at the Cricketers Arms on Nuncargate in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The first meet-up was held on 23rd November and these evening sessions will take place at least until Christmas, at which point their continuation will be reviewed.
The Facebook page was set up early in November and three weeks in had already reached over 9,000 people. Click HERE or on the image below to check out our Facebook page to keep up-to-date with what's going on. The Facebook page has also been developed as a peer support mechanism for people within this community and for the wider community who are interested in developing a better understanding of the issues and challenges facing people who are LGBT+.
The first of the regular sessions at the Cricketers was lively and although numbers were small this was made up by a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We had some great discussions on the type of activities the group could explore taking forward. Contact AVA on 01623 555 551 or email Samantha Clarke for information about these regular sessions.
