More information on support for vulnerable people and call for volunteers for a range of new services

It's at times like this when we all need to pull together. Local voluntary sector organisations are really stepping up to the plate to provide a network of support people most need. Ashfield Voluntary Action has put together information on the local offer for people in need, how services work and information on new volunteering opportunities.

Whilst it's understandable that we are all feeling anxious, this crisis has brought out the best in people and we are seeing a marked increase in an interest in volunteering. What's even better is that some of these volunteering opportunities can be done by people who are themselves social isolating; so you can help others, do something for your local community and make new friends over the telephone at the same time.

The Service offered by the Carers Trust

The Carers Trust supports unpaid carers and their loved ones and, depending on the availability of volunteers, offer shopping, collecting medication and dog walking. They also have a team of telephone volunteers who can call regularly for a chat and check up to tackle social isolation and loneliness.

Advice and information from the Carers Trust on keeping safe.

The Carers Trust has produced a simple guide offering advice and guidance on how to keep safe when accessing services provided by volunteers.

The guidance covers a range of subject areas including: help with shopping, help with collecting medication, befriending phone calls, checking identification, social media and the safeguards the Carers Trust put in place to protect you.

Volunteering opportunities through the Carers Trust.

The Carers Trust is looking to recruit a team of volunteers to support unpaid carers and their loved ones. Their volunteer service supports unpaid carers and their loved ones. The Carers Trust have a limited amount of volunteers but their numbers are growing every day to offer support with dog walking, shopping and collecting medication (depending on volunteer availability in the area). They also have 30 telephone volunteers who can call on a regular basis for a social chat/check-up, to help tackle social isolation and loneliness.

The Carers Trust is advertising for more volunteers at present and will be producing a poster to be sent out to offer our services soon. If you know anyone who needs help and support from any of our volunteers please drop them an email and they will do their best.

Ashfield Voluntary Action - what we are doing locally to support you.

Whilst there are a number of new initiatives being set up to support people who may be encountering difficulties because of social isolating and the need to stay safe at home, these schemes tend to be targetted, focussed at specific groups of individuals.

Ashfield Voluntary Action is working towards setting up a project providing a small local safety net helping with shopping, collecting medication and a telephone befriending service. If we can't help you we know someone who can - we will provide direct support, or signpost you to the most appropriate service.
