Ashfield Voluntary Action supports the local community in Ashfield by developing local community groups, providing volunteering opportunities, and delivering projects to improve social opportunities, health and wellbeing in Ashfield.
The Family Nordic Walking group is one of many activities AVA are arranging as part of the ‘Inspiring Ashfield’ programme which is working closely with social prescribing link workers. Link workers prescribe social activities, rather than medication, to help people with things such as loneliness, improving mental and physical health, financial wellbeing, and many other areas of practical support. We are listening to them to get a better understanding of the problems people are facing in Ashfield, and then creating activities to address those needs.
As part of this programme we are working with local organisations to increase community activities for the link workers to refer people into. Other activities are coming soon, include:
We are also encouraging people to join us as a AVA volunteer for ‘Inspiring Ashfield’ as there are huge benefits to health and wellbeing when you volunteer! It’s a fantastic way to meet new people, get active, share skills, and feel a part of the local community. We have some great opportunities for volunteers to share or develop their skills and make a real impact to the people living in Ashfield. I think the past year has shown us just how important the voluntary sector is in Ashfield, and the importance of community action. We want to carry that spirit forward and bring more volunteering and community activities to the people of Ashfield!
