New facilities at King's Mill Hospital

New facilities at Nottinghamshire hospital to enhance patient care

Patients in Nottinghamshire are due to benefit from a major £5 million investment to expand the Emergency Department at King’s Mill Hospital, which is run by Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Funding for the project has been provided by NHS England.

The project, which is awaiting planning permission for some areas, will see a number of improvements, including the addition of 14 more treatment spaces to the Majors department increasing the total from 26 to 40 to support the sickest patients who attend our ED, as well as introducing a range of new facilities designed to improve patient flow, increase capacity and help the Trust meet growing demand for emergency care services.

There will also be more patient toilets, a space for patients with mental health needs and a new seating area with room for 40 people, alongside four assessment rooms.

Another key feature will be the development of our ambulance handover area which will help to identify patients’ needs as soon as they arrive and immediately direct them to the most appropriate place for their care. This will ensure quicker ambulance turnaround times getting crews back on the road sooner, responding to emergencies.

The changes are expected to make a significant difference to the experience of patients who visit the emergency department. They will provide a calmer environment for those who need to spend a long time in the department which will in turn enable colleagues to care for more patients.

Richard Kemp, Divisional Director of Nursing, Urgent and Emergency Care said:

“Demand for urgent and emergency care continues to grow, and this development will give us the additional capacity and improved facilities we need to respond to that demand.

“The £5 million development forms part of a wider programme of investment in services and facilities, supporting the Trust’s ambition to ensure patients and local communities continue to receive high-quality care now and in the future.”

Initial works are now underway, with the first phase predicted to be operational by the end of this year. The project is expected to be completed by February 2028.
