Community Action Children playing ball games on grass field

Did you know that most community groups are set up when people feel like what they want or need is not available in their area, or doesn't work for them?

At Ashfield Voluntary Action, we are passionate about supporting the community to develop its own solutions and build up its own resources. This can work really well because local people usually have a very good understanding of what will work in their area. Home-grown ideas also usually have stronger support from the rest of the community so it's vital to the ongoing success of community activities. Sometimes something sounds like a good idea, but might not work locally due to things like transport problems, or a lack of suitable spaces to run activities, which larger organisation may not be aware of.

That's where the power of local people comes in...

Coxmoor Estate

One really good example of supporting communities to support themselves beginning to work in Ashfield may be found on the Coxmoor Estate in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Over the years, there has been a lot of consultation with the community to identify the issues in the area and explore ideas for the future, but the next step - turning these ideas into practical solutions has been a slower process.

With support from AVA, a handful of local people have established CRAG - the Coxmoor Residents Action Group with the aim of working together to make small, positive changes with a big impact on their community. The group are always welcoming people wanting to get involved and they have a number of exciting community events and activities planned for the future.

If you're a Coxmoor resident and interested in joining CRAG, you can either visit their Facebook page HERE or use the contact details below.

Please ring Samantha Clarke from AVA on 01623 555 551 or email s.clarke@ashfieldvoluntaryaction.org.uk if you would like to find out more about the work that is being done on Coxmoor, or if you need support for similar ideas elsewhere in Ashfield.
